see péter and plomb. this expression refers to the old fuse devices made of lead wires in electrical installations. these metal elements connecting two terminals of a circuit were designed to prevent electrical overloads by melting to protect downstream devices and conductors (now often replaced by a circuit breaker). the expression, still very much alive, has therefore outlived the object.
